Breaking Free from Unconscious Patterns: The Power of Following Through

Have you ever experienced the feeling of being on a roll, taking consistent action towards your goals, only to suddenly stop and postpone those last few steps? It’s something I’ve witnessed in my own life, and I’ve seen it in so many others. It’s that moment when you could take one more action that will bring you closer to your vision, but for some reason, you just don’t follow through. This is a common pattern, and it’s driven by unconscious beliefs and survival strategies that we’ve adopted over the years.

I recently had a conversation with Gail about this very thing, and it really opened my eyes to how we can begin to recognize and shift these behaviors. When we begin something new—especially when it involves growth or stepping outside of our comfort zone—we often encounter what I like to call the "rubber band pull." You know that feeling, right? You’re moving forward, but then something inside of you pulls you back to what’s familiar, what feels safe, and what doesn’t require as much of you.

It’s easy to slip into complacency, and often we don’t even realize it’s happening. It can feel like the easiest choice is to get busy with smaller tasks or even procrastinate, rather than tackling that big goal or making the final push. This is a result of the unconscious patterns that we’ve carried with us, often imprinted when we were very young. Our survival strategies back then—whether they were based on fear, shame, or other emotions—are still present in our subconscious minds, and they can drive us to avoid change.

But here’s the good news: recognizing these patterns is the first step in shifting them. Once we become aware of what’s happening, we can move through it and take those final steps. We can begin to live from a place of heart-centered action, knowing that our desires and goals are worth the effort.

One of the most powerful insights that came out of my conversation with Gail is how much energy we can gain when we push through that resistance. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, and yes, it’s easy to fall into familiar patterns, but when we do take that action, it often feels so much better than we expected. There’s a sense of accomplishment, alignment, and energy that fuels us to continue moving forward.

And here’s the key: we don’t have to be perfect. We don’t need to follow through every time with 100% motivation. What matters is the practice of recognizing when we’re being pulled back into old patterns, and consciously choosing to keep moving forward. There will always be a "second chance" to come back into alignment with our hearts, our vision, and the life we truly want to create.

In my work with clients, I always encourage them to take time to reflect on the choices they make. What are the patterns they keep falling into? What is the fear or resistance that holds them back? More importantly, how can they move through it with compassion and understanding? It’s all part of the process of personal growth and transformation.

The power of following through, even when it's difficult, is that it builds momentum, helps us break free from old limitations, and brings us closer to living the life we truly love.

So, if you’ve been procrastinating or feeling stuck in some area of your life, know that you’re not alone. It’s never too late to step back into your heart, recognize what you truly want, and take the next action step that will bring you closer to your goal. Embrace the journey, trust the process, and remember that every step forward is a step toward creating a life that’s in alignment with your true self.

Key Takeaways:

  1.  Recognize the Patterns: Pay attention to when you feel pulled back into complacency. This is a sign of an unconscious pattern.
  2.  Take Small Steps: Even if it feels uncomfortable, take small actions towards your goal. Trust that this will lead to more energy and momentum.
  3.  Honor Your Heart: Always come back to your heart and your true desires. This is where your power lies.
  4.  Embrace the Journey: Growth is a process, and every step counts. Don’t be hard on yourself; be compassionate and celebrate your progress.

Remember, life is about progress, not perfection. When you start recognizing the patterns that hold you back, you can break free from them and create the life you truly deserve. Keep moving forward, and don’t let fear or complacency stop you from living your best life.
