This year, I made a conscious decision to deepen my connection with my horse, Finn. My intention was to work with him in such a way that we could communicate effortlessly, moving in sync without the need for a halter or lead rope. Achieving this level of understanding required patience, practice, and a keen awareness of the subtle cues between us.
To develop this mutual feel, I began by using a halter and lead rope, applying only the lightest pressure necessary to capture his attention. Horses are incredibly sensitive creatures; they can feel a fly land on their skin despite their thick coats. Knowing this, I focused on being mindful of the pressure I used when guiding him—whether inviting him to move right or left, back up, turn in a circle, or move forward. Each gentle movement was a step toward our ultimate goal: to dance together freely.
I recall my time with another horse, Aragon, a big, beautiful black gelding with whom I loved to dance. He has since moved on to greener pastures—quite literally—where he roams vast fields with other horses, enjoying trail rides and a different kind of life with someone who loves him, though perhaps not quite as much as I do. Working with Finn has been a delightful new chapter, as he brings a completely different feel and energy compared to Aragon.
Today was a day of celebration. I set the intention to be in the flow of life, aligning with my true nature and connecting deeply with Finn. Together, we danced to a song aptly named "Flowing," and it was a beautiful culmination of our shared practice and dedication. There is a profound joy in recognizing something you love and committing time to nurture it, especially when it involves building a relationship with another being.
This experience has me reflecting on the importance of intentional practice in our lives. By staying present and aware, we can grow and nurture the things we love simply because we love them. It's a reminder of how rewarding it can be to invest ourselves fully in our passions.
I'm curious—where in your life are you choosing to intentionally develop your capacity to stay present and cultivate something you love? I'd love to hear your stories and experiences.
