Have you ever experienced the incredible sensation of being truly seen and understood by someone? It’s not just about hearing the right words but feeling a deep resonance that reaches into your very soul. That moment when another person gets you so profoundly that something within you relaxes and begins to heal. Today, I want to explore this magical experience and how it can transform the way we relate to ourselves and others.
I remember vividly the first time I felt truly understood by another human being. It was during a vulnerable conversation with a woman who was organizing a Nonviolent Communication family camp I wanted to attend. I was nervous, sharing my fears while holding the phone tightly, staring at the floor in deep concentration. And then, something remarkable happened: she resonated with my felt experience.
It was more than just listening; it was magic. She understood exactly how it felt to be me in that moment. The impact was profound, as if a frozen part of me started to thaw. It was a feeling I’d never had before, and I wanted to learn how to have conversations like that. I became passionate about understanding and practicing Nonviolent Communication, realizing how it could offer a structure for meaningful, empathetic exchanges.
My friend Gail Donohue, who shares this passion, echoes the significance of being deeply understood. She describes the lasting impact of feeling truly felt, a quality that continues to calm and soothe the nervous system long after the moment has passed. It’s the same feeling I often experience with horses, those magnificent, nonjudgmental beings who understand our energy and presence in ways humans sometimes struggle to.
Growing up, I often found human connections to be dangerous, and people felt like predators. But when we’re met with presence and true understanding, something shifts. Even those who may seem harsh or disconnected can soften when they are seen for who they are in the moment. Humans, just like animals, have the potential to respond beautifully to genuine connection.
Resonance, however, isn’t just about what we say; it’s about how we say it. Our entire being—body, mind, and spirit—comes into play. When we meet someone with our whole, present selves, we invite them into a space of healing and growth. For me, it’s been a long journey, one that required years of practice and support to feel safe and empowered. I’ve had to slow down, hold space for myself, and seek the company of compassionate people who could hold space for me.
But the work is worth it. Being able to recognize when my own triggers come up and step into my truth has been life-changing. Instead of reacting automatically, I now try to slow down, practice self-awareness, and choose how I want to respond. It’s a new muscle I’m still strengthening, one that brings both fear and excitement. Yet, I find joy in the process, in learning to harness my emotions and act from a place of love and intentionality.
If this resonates with you, consider exploring Nonviolent Communication or finding a safe space to practice feeling seen. Healing through connection is a beautiful journey, one that allows us to experience life more fully and authentically. Gail and I are passionate about supporting others in discovering their unique path to this kind of healing and joy.
The road to self-discovery is rich, sometimes challenging, and always rewarding. And as we continue to explore together, there’s so much more to uncover about our purpose, our growth, and the visions we hold for our lives.
Until next time, may you feel deeply seen, understood, and inspired on your journey.
